An online retailer from Birmingham has been shortlisted in the Nectar Business Small Business Awards 2011 in the Start-Up of the Year category. Hitari Trade Limited (www.hitaritrade.co.uk) - which sells gaming consoles, accessories, toys and gadgets - is just weeks away from hearing if it will pick up the accolade, judged by business woman and star of hit show The Apprentice, Karren Brady.

Kamal Hitari, the company’s founder, decided to give up work as an IT Consultant after the birth of his son so he could spend more time at home.  He spotted a gap in the market for the sale of ‘bundles’ of electronic equipment to families, who Kamal noticed often purchased extra controllers and games so their whole family could make use of games consoles.

Since setting up the business last year, trading out of his home, the company has experienced rapid growth and now employs six people at a warehouse to meet the growing orders. Thanks to the business’ success in its early months of trading, it is in with a good chance of winning the prize of £2,000 and 50,000 Nectar points along with the prestigious title.

Kamal commented: “I’m so pleased to be shortlisted in the Nectar Business Small Business Awards – the recognition makes all the hard work worth it. We’ve experienced phenomenal growth in our first year, and have ambitious plans for the future. Winning a high profile award could be great news for the business, which we hope will continue its success over the coming months. The £2,000 prize money and 50,000 Nectar points would certainly help propel our business to the next level".

Hitari Trade was just one of hundreds of hugely successful and dedicated small UK enterprises that entered the Nectar Business Small Business Awards. The entry will now be judged by a panel of experts, including Karren Brady who will decide the final winner of this category alongside small business journalist Guy Clapperton, Marketing Director at Nectar, James Frost and Merchandising and Marketing Director for UK and Ireland Office Depot, John O’Keeffe.

James Frost, Marketing Director at Nectar says: “Start-Up Business of the Year Award is a new award for 2011 that will reward a new company that is set for an exciting and profitable future. In challenging economic times, these individuals have worked really hard and sometimes taken risks to get their companies up and running. We wish all the Start-Up businesses, including Hitari Trade the best of luck in this competitive category.”
